Tom Waits Korner, Volume 1 Got a fabulous compilation-book of Waits interviews from Lake O Library, Innocent When You Dream. Have been reading it at work, and figured it would make for good blogging... not that my free time has been too boring. I spent maybe too much of the last few days out of my gourd, but have also hit a beerfest, worked overtime, sung "Radio, Radio" at karaoke, discovered the music of John freakin Prine, helped folks (Jamie and Hales) move to a new house, and most of all hung out with my friend Tommy G, who I knew on LJ but just met up with last week, and have already hung out with 3 times. Still, all of that is kinda a haze.... uh, yeah... so, since these Tom Waits interviews are written down in front of me, I'll transcribe them for your magellafication: | | Wednesday, June 18th, 2008 | | 8:48 pm |

for DJ Ghost List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now, shaping your spring. Post these instructions in your LJ along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they're listening to. If you feel like doing some song-picking: bigbetty, callmemorbid, grungerocker83, leanasidhe, mirrorglassball, fast_over_maps, wombat_baby it would be greattt. | | Saturday, March 8th, 2008 | | 4:15 pm |
I just finished watching a movie I saw probably 28 years ago (I dunno if I saw it in first-run). The Lathe of Heaven; the novel was written by Ursula Le Guin. I always meant to see it again, and I was encouraged to by a friend who just found/ blogged out about it. It's funny cuz it's set in Portland Oregon, where I am, and in the Bill Moyers/ Le Guin interview on the DVD, and the Wikipedia article on Le Guin there is some discussion of sex/ gender, which I've been reading/ thinking about a lot. | | Thursday, February 21st, 2008 | | 10:31 am |

I saw I'm Not There. I liked quite a bit of it, but there's a couple things here n there that bugged me. I was maybe expecting more of a biography, or maybe just something a bit easier to get ahold of. I think this film is far from a "biopic"; I'm guessing it's as much a biopic as Across The Universe was, although I've only read about that one. It's better to see it with the idea that it's a bunch of skits based on stuff relating to events and songs of Bob Dylan. I was very glad to hear some quotes from old Dylan interviews in the script, particularly the one here - the young guy who plays "Woody Guthrie Bob Dylan" uses the first part of the answer to the question about "what made you decide to go the rock-'n'-roll route?" It's possibly the best interview answer ever, in full. I'm reading another 33 1/3 Series book, the one about The Who Sell Out. It's okay, although it's really got a lot of exposition on things I already knew about the 1960s and The Who. I'm halfway through and he's barely touched the album yet. I think it'd be a good book for someone who knew nothing about these things... but it's okay and I want to get to the album parts, so I'll keep reading it. Basically, I'd like to read almost all the 33 1/3 books... even the ones about albums I don't have or care about much. I read the Loveless one, since I kinda know the author (haven't seen him in months, though), and still enjoyed it as facts, good writing, etc. The best one is the Bee Thousand one, since Marc Woodworth is a poet and really knows how to write; Daydream Nation is almost as good, very similar, but I didn't get into the author interpreting the songs to the last presumptive detail. Anyway, I'd like to read 80 or 90 percent of these books, pretty much any except for the ones that are purely made up and have no facts at all (e. the PJ Harvey one). Finally got the In The Aeroplane Over The Sea CD; to quote McDonald's, I'm lovin it. That 33 1/3 book for it is in Multnomah Library, so I have a hold on it. From what I know about Mangum, he's pretty interesting and it should be a good read. And I have a brand-new copy of Captain Beefheart's Grow Fins box set on hold, too. Makes me as happy as two flamingos in a fruit fight. | | Friday, December 7th, 2007 | | 5:30 pm |
finally! ...so I finally got my stuff sent to everybody. Sorry for the week-or-so delay to most of all of you (Ben, ya lucked out), but I was sending stuff to a couple other folks not involved in the LJ thing too-- had to look out for Chaz; he's the only person who comments on all my MySpace crap. Anyway, it's all sent. Also, check out my streamlined NEW LJ profile. It is very streamline and enjoyable. Thanks.
I'm gonna be having a broke-ass December, so there will be even less to report. I'm going to see a friend's band for free tonight. I've watched a lot of sports lately that none of you care about. I've enjoyed Tim And Eric Nite Live lately... mmm, don't think anyone cares about that, either. (I'm amazed at the internet, though; you can get all these Tim and Eric, Maria Bamford, and Bob Odenkirk shows at Superdeluxe, Channel 101shows, and YouTube videos, and it's all free free FREEE, and better than TV.) I got a 33 1/3 Series book about The Who Sell Out; I guess I'll read that this weekend. Workin overtime this week, I hope, to get some more money. I guess then I could blow some money on ticket to see Malkmus (Janet Weiss on drums, man), but crap, I hate to spend the money without knowing for sure I'll get overtime... ah, I'm sure I will... besides, show might be sold out already... I really should go see I'm Not There, even if I'm broke. | | Friday, November 9th, 2007 | | 3:56 pm |

contestant For the first five people that reply to me and re-post this challenge, I will send you something. It might be something I've made, or something cool from my hidden stash, it might be a mix CD, a nice card or postcard from the library store I think you will enjoy, or something else that is awesome. Whatever it is, I promise that I will get it to you in 30 days or fewer. The only thing you need to do in order to participate is to be one of the first five to reply to this, AND post this very same thing on YOUR LiveJournal - cause it's fun to give.

KING of KONG I just saw this movie- great movie. It's about a nice, humble family guy who's always finished runner-up at things in life trying to take the world record for Donkey Kong away from The Most Awful Arrogant Prick In The Entire World... whoa, let me amend that-- The Most Awful Arrogant Prick In The Entire World With The Most Obnoxious Hair Ever. And guess who serves on the (self-elected) board of people who determine the rules and winners of world video game records? "The Most Awful Arrogant Prick In The Entire World With The Most Obnoxious Hair Ever" might be your guess... and you'd be right! Also, guess who everyone else in that (self-elected) organization worships as a god? Yes, TMAAPitEWwtMOHE, again! Problem is... The Guinness Book of Records decides this bunch is credible for selecting all Guinness Book video game records. So... does the truth come out in the end??
It's a documentary... but damn if it isn't the most bizarrely fanciful, couldn't-be-real good vs evil movie I've seen in ages. | | Saturday, September 22nd, 2007 | | 3:24 pm |
why not write something, finally? | | Sunday, August 26th, 2007 | | 12:48 pm |
gonna be OFFLINE for a bit Was just on vacation, am now back in Portland but got rid of Qwest (I ain't paying over $40/ month for net, f--- that), so have to wait til Wednesday to (hopefully?) get some Comcast DSL.
I'm hoping in a few months the free Portland wireless will be around my place, so I can pay $0/ month for net.... but I'm not gonna hold my breath, exactly. I do need to get my wireless antenna out once in a while just to check, just in case, though....
Vacation went well. Didn't get to see too many VA folks, but I saw my oldest friend Eric at one of his family's beach places in Duck, NC. Got to relax some, sleep some, hang around Duck, so that was decent.
Some day, I will make more interesting blogs. Really. So don't dump me off your Friend lists just yet, thanks. |
